What Instagram highlights are
A normal Instagram story disappears 24 hours after it is posted. Highlights are the exception. When an account owner wants a story to stay visible, they add it to a highlight, which is a named collection that sits as a row of circles just under the bio on their profile. Each circle can hold dozens of stories, and the owner can keep adding to it for years.
Businesses use highlights as a permanent menu: prices, opening hours, reviews, shipping information, product launches. Creators use them as a portfolio of their best stories, travel diaries or tutorials. Public figures use them to keep interviews, announcements and event coverage easy to find. Because highlights never expire on their own, they are often the most useful part of a profile for anyone who missed the original stories.
Why Instagram hides highlights from visitors without an account
If you open an Instagram profile in a browser without being logged in, you usually see the profile picture and a few posts before a sign-up wall appears. Tapping a highlight circle almost always triggers that wall. Instagram does this to encourage sign-ups, not because the content is private. The owner chose to make the highlight public, and anyone with an account can open it.
InstaSPY requests the same public highlight data on its own servers and shows it on a normal web page. You see exactly what a logged-in stranger would see, nothing more. If the account is private, the highlights are not shown, because they are not public.
How to view Instagram highlights without an account, step by step
- Get the username – Use the @handle, not the display name. Usernames contain only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
- Search it above – Type the username, or paste the full instagram.com profile link, and press search.
- Open the Highlights tab – The highlight circles load with their titles and cover images, in the same order as on Instagram.
- Pick a highlight – Open any circle to play its stories one after another. Photos and videos load in full quality.
- Move between highlights – Go back and open another circle, or switch to the Stories tab to see anything posted in the last 24 hours.
Highlights vs. stories: what is the difference?
| Stories | Highlights | |
|---|---|---|
| How long they last | 24 hours | Until the owner removes them |
| Where they appear | Ring around the profile picture | Circles under the bio |
| Organised into groups | No | Yes, by named collection |
| Viewable without account on InstaSPY | Yes, if public | Yes, if public |
| Shows who viewed | Owner sees logged-in viewers for 48 hours | Owner sees logged-in viewers only for the original story window |
Because highlights are built from old stories, the viewer list for a highlighted story is generally only visible to the owner during the original 48-hour window after posting. Either way, viewing on InstaSPY is not done from an Instagram account, so no username of yours is involved.
Who views highlights without an account
- Shoppers – check a small brand's price list, size guide or customer reviews before buying.
- Travellers – look at a hotel, restaurant or tour operator's highlights for recent photos.
- Recruiters and clients – review a freelancer's or creator's portfolio highlights.
- Fans – catch up on saved tour, event or behind-the-scenes highlights from an artist.
- People not on Instagram – read public information that is only published in highlights.
Tips when a highlight does not load
- Check the spelling of the username. A missing underscore leads to a different account.
- If there is no Highlights tab, the account simply has not created any highlights.
- If the profile is private, highlights cannot be viewed by anyone who is not an approved follower.
- If an individual highlight looks shorter than expected, the owner may have removed some stories from it.
What you can and can't see in highlights
Highlights follow the same public/private rules as the rest of the profile.
What you can see
- Every story saved in a public highlight
- Highlight titles and cover images
- Current stories from the same public account
What you can't see
- Highlights from private accounts
- Close friends stories
- Stories the owner removed from a highlight
Highlights do not expire on their own, so they stay available as long as the owner keeps them on the profile.
Frequently asked questions
