Quick answer
An Instagram unfollowers tracker saves the follower list of a public account and compares it with later scans. Anyone who was in the earlier list but is missing from the new one is shown as an unfollower, and new names are shown as new followers. Instagram doesn't notify you about unfollows, so comparing lists over time is the only reliable method.

Instagram notifies you when someone follows you, but not when someone stops. The follower count simply drops, with no indication of who left. Finding that person by hand means remembering hundreds or thousands of names.
An unfollowers tracker solves this by taking a snapshot of the full follower list, then taking another snapshot later. Comparing the two shows exactly who disappeared and who joined between the scans.
The first scan cannot show unfollowers, because there is nothing to compare it with yet. Results start from the second scan.
A lower follower count is not always caused by people choosing to unfollow. Instagram regularly removes spam and fake accounts, which can lower counts across many profiles at once. Accounts that are deactivated or deleted by their owners also disappear from follower lists.
A tracker helps you tell these apart. If a familiar name is missing, it was probably a real unfollow. If the missing accounts have no posts and random usernames, it was likely an Instagram cleanup.
Besides unfollowers, comparing the follower list with the following list shows accounts that you follow but that do not follow back. Creators and small businesses use this to tidy up their following list and keep a healthier ratio.
It also shows fans, meaning accounts that follow you that you do not follow. Those are often the most engaged part of an audience.
Many unfollower apps ask you to log in with your Instagram password. That gives a third party full control of your account and can trigger Instagram security checks, temporary blocks or even account suspension.
InstaSPY never asks for your Instagram password. It reads only public follower lists, so your account is not involved in the scan at all.
Very large follower lists can take longer to collect, and Instagram sometimes limits how much of a list can be read at once. When a list cannot be collected completely, InstaSPY does not create unfollower results, so you never see false unfollowers from a partial list.
Someone who unfollows and follows again between two scans will not appear as a change. More frequent scans give a more detailed picture.
